A moving talk by Capt. Charles Moore of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, who first discovered the Great Pacific Garbage Patch -- an endless floating waste of plastic trash. Now he's drawing attention to the growing, choking problem of plastic debris in our seas (Via TED).
A new article comments upon bottled water makers attempts to move consumers over to "flavored water" (via BusinessWeek). Says one BusinessWeek reader, "When my 2 year old son becomes an adult, I will tell him all about this bottled water fad and we will both have a good laugh."
About two dozen Penn State students demonstrated yesterday afternoon, protesting the sale of bottled water at Penn State (via the Daily Collegian). According to one of the group's leaders, Washington University in St. Louis has already banned the sale of disposable bottled water. It will be interesting to see how this plays out both at Penn State and across universities.
As an update to a story we reported on November 30th, on December 2nd, the Toronto City Council voted to ban disposable water bottles on all municipal premises by 2011 (via Canada.com).
Although companies including Nestle are lobbying to appeal the measure, the city of Toronto looks poised to ban bottled water from all civic buildings starting in December 2011 (via The Toronto Star).
"A Japanese bottling company recalled eight-million bottles of Crystal Geyser mineral water distributed in the U.S. Monday after customers reported a strange odor. Last month Otsuka Beverage Company received 75 complaints that the water smelled like insecticide and medicine" (via Tristate)
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is allegedly about to release a report showing "Shocking levels of contamination in bottled waters", in violation of laws or EU regulations (via the Independent).
